the Bonds of Empire were created
a) The
charters including the MA and VA charters gave the colonists rights as
Englishmen
i)
The colonists felt they were part of the
England and felt loyalty to the mother-country.
(1) When
New Netherlands was taken over by British, the government gave the colonists
Englishmen rights even though they were not all British descent.
b) The
navigation acts
i)
The acts were originally designed to
benefit the British but also aided the Colonists
(1) The
acts allowed the colonists to build a maritime industry and develop an economic
system
(2) Also
the colonists started producing items that the British paid extra money for
(3) This
lead to the development of middle class merchants.
c) The
Age of War
i)
In Europe, Britain and France were in
constant war. America continent was dragged into the war.
(1) The
colonists joined in fighting with the British against the French and Indians.
(2) Fighting
side by side the British and Americans respected each other.
2) What
caused the bonds to crackle
a) The
French and Indian War
i)
The British officers acted arrogantly
against the colonists creating resentment
ii) After
the war, the British debt had nearly doubled.
(1) The
colonists refused to pay taxes in order to lower the debt.
b) The
sugar act
i)
The British imposed this in effort to
fill the British treasury.
(1) Did
not affect a lot of colonists
(2) Was
hard on smugglers, fair trail impeded for the accused.
c) The
stamp act
i)
Tax on all paper goods
(1) Affect
almost all colonists
(2) Offenders
tried in court (those who did not buy taxed paper goods)
(3) Patrick
Henry: “no taxation without representation”
(4) Colonists
reacted with by boycotting goods
(5) The
act was repealed by British Parliament
d) Declaratory
Act
i)
In response to removal of stamp act
(1) Stated
that Parliament had right to govern colonies in all aspects including taxes
e) The
Tea Act
i)
British lowered price of tea so that
smuggled tea not worth buying. The taxes were disguised as import duties.
(1) Angered
colonists
(2) Lead
to Boston Tea Party
f) Intolerable
Acts
i)
The 5 acts that truly pissed off the
colonists
(1) Closed
British port until the spilled tea was paid for
(2) British
officers that commit crimes against colonists will be tried in Britan
(3) British
soldiers would be quartered in America
by the expense of the colonists
(4) The
MA government was made less democratic
(5) The
Quebec Act: gave French Canadians right to self-govern
ii) The
wavering colonists that sympathized with colonists were these acts were imposed
3) What
caused the break in the Bonds of the Empire
a) Battle
of Lexington and Concord
(1) In
MA, the British Troops were ordered to search for weapons in the village.
(2) However
the officers went to other village first after seeing the men were armed.
(3) The
British and armed men faced off, none wanting to fire.
(4) Then
someone fired, and shooting began.
(5) A
couple of colonists were killed and many injured
(6) The
British continued on to the original village
ii) This
battle was the first battle of the American Revolution.
(1) The
committee of correspondence spread wide rumors about the battle and soon many
colonists joined in attacking the British as they made their way back to Boston
iii) This
battle created deep mistrust that refused to be mended
b) Olive
Branch Petition
i)
At the second continental congress, many
delegates desired to mend the break by appealing to the King
ii) In
his anger, King George III never read the letter and any hopes of mending the
relationship the colonists and the British died.
